1994
   The wave of Sonic frenzy continued well into 1994, with six different Sonic games created...to this day a record amount for a single year. Unfortunately, most of them were little more than cash-ins on the Sonic license, but the year also harbored Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles -- Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles collectively -- which is arguably the pinnacle of Sonic's 16-bit collection and his entire 2D era.

   The hugely popular Knuckles the Echidna enters the ever-growing Sonicverse, and becomes as important a staple in the series as Sonic and Tails. Nack the Weasel (known in Japan as Fang the Sniper) debuted with Triple Trouble.

January -- Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on the Sega Game Gear is released in Europe.
February 2
 -- Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on the Sega Genesis is released in the USA. Included with the game for those with the foresight to have had reserved their copy is Sonic Boom, a music CD containing tracks from Sonic Spinball and the US version of Sonic CD.
February -- Sonic 3 on the Sega Mega Drive is released in Europe.
March 18
 -- Sonic Drift on the Sega Game Gear is released in Japan.
May 27 -- Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on the Sega Mega Drive is released in Japan.
July 26
 -- Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on the Sega Master System is released in Latin America.
August -- Sonic the Hedgehog's Gameworld on the Sega Pico is released in Japan.
August
 -- Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball on the Sega Game Gear is released in Europe.
September -- Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball on the Sega Game Gear is released in the USA.
September
 -- Tails and the Music Maker on the Sega Pico is released in the USA.
September ABC renews the network "Sonic the Hedgehog" animated series for another season. This time, fourteen episodes are produced, including one loosely based on Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball.
October 18
 -- Sonic & Knuckles on the Sega Genesis in the USA and the Sega Mega Drive in Japan are released simultaneously.
October 19 · Sonic & Knuckles: Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the remixed soundtrack of Sonic & Knuckles, is released in Japan.
November 11
 -- Sonic & Tails 2 on the Sega Game Gear is released in Japan.
November -- Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble on the Sega Game Gear is released in the USA and Europe.
December 7
 · Sonic the Hedgehog Remix, a music CD containing remixed tracks from the original Japanese Sonic CD, is released in Japan.
