After knocking Robotnik's recently re-launched Death Egg back outta the sky before it even left the atmosphere, the explosion sent Sonic and Tails back down onto Floating Island. They landed deep in the Mushroom Hills, while the Death Egg crash-landed on the top of Floating Island's largest volcano. Now there is no choice: Robotnik needs the Master Emerald to get his Death Egg back up and running, and Sonic knows it. Knuckles, a bit peeved with all the trouble by this point, decides it's time to stop taking names and start handing out punishments. Now it's a mad three-sided race to the Master Emerald, and there can only be one victor...

The first and only game sporting the revolutionary "Lock-On" technology, Sonic & Knuckles picks up where Sonic the Hedgehog 3 leaves off.

By itself, S&K is a five or six level (depending on who you play as) trip with the option to control Sonic or Knuckles. Gameplay is identical to Sonic 3, only Knuckles has a few tricks of his own. Gliding and climbing are an integral part of his moves arsenal, although his jumping ability isn't quite up to par with Sonic and Tails'. He can do the Spin Dash as well as anybody else.

The real beauty of S&K shines through when you "Lock-On" with Sonic 3. Both games directly complement each other, and combine to form the biggest and best 2D Sonic game ever. Locking-On gives the player the option to play as Knuckles in the Sonic 3 levels, or Tails in the S&K levels. It also opens up seven new Special Stages, complete with hyper-strong Super Emeralds, which turn Super Sonic into Hyper Sonic, Super Knuckles into Hyper Knuckles, and Tails into Super Tails.

Infact, much of the level-design changes, and there are just some things you cannot see unless you've got Sonic 3 Locked-On with S&K. But the game doesn't stop there...Lock-On Sonic & Knuckles with Sonic 2, and you can play as Knuckles in that game! Lock-On S&K with Sonic 1, and you've got an unlimited supply of randomly-generated Sonic 3-style Special Stages. Lock-On S&K with nearly any other Sega Genesis game in existence, and you get a randomly-generated Sonic 3-style Special Stage. Now that's what I call more for the money!

Grade: S

Mushroom Hill Zone

Mushroom Hill Zone: Giant mushrooms grow wild in this strange forest, where seasons change in the blink of an eye and unusual devices are part of the scenery. Thick vines weave through the trees, and natural updrafts blow fungi spore into the air.

Flying Battery Zone

Flying Battery Zone: Booby traps rule around Robotnik's Flying Battery blimp. Giant propellors and missile traps line the outside, while the interior is filled with false robot machines and spinning corkscrew columns.

Sandopolis Zone

Sandopolis Zone: Heat vapors rise from the sizzling sand, distorting the distant pyramids against a sunset sky. Monumental towers stand like gods in the massive desert, while sandfalls flow from plateaus. Ghosts and darkness rule inside the pyramids.

Lava Reef Zone

Lava Reef Zone: Magma flows through this rocky maze of underground tunnels...the inside of an active volcano. Things cool down in Act 2, where the buried ruins of an ancient time rest upon hardened magma flows.

Hidden Palace Zone
Hidden Palace Zone: Resting place for the Master Emerald, hyroglyphic carvings on the walls of this ancient palace tell of the power within this giant stone. Perhaps...a prophecy?
Sky Sanctuary Zone

Sky Sanctuary Zone: As Robotnik's Death Egg re-launches, the delicate towering ruins crumble from their foundations. It's a race to the top, as Sonic and Tails chase the Eggman into the clouds along the crumbling towers of a lost civilization.

Death Egg Zone

Death Egg Zone: The Death Egg's interior is a massive arena of electrical & mechanical traps and metallic floors. The outside is a whirling shell where gravity is little more than a state of mind...

Doomsday Zone: It's a mad dash through the vast infinity that is outer space. As Robotnik tries to escape with the Master Emerald, it's up to Super Sonic to maneuver against the flow of a meteor shower and stop the Eggman's getaway.
