1996
Here it is...nobody thought it could get any worse from 1995 to 1996, but it did. I'm sure this is one year Sega would like to forget. With Sonic X-Treme aborted before its birth, many began to question the Saturn and indeed Sega's capability. The mediocre Sonic 3D Blast, while not a bad way to end off the Genesis, just didn't cut it on Saturn, leaving Sonic the Fighters as the only truly noteworthy title this year. Unfortunately, the game got a very limited run outside of Japan.

Bean the Dynamite and Bark the Polarbear entered the Sonicverse with Sonic the Fighters, although they haven't actually hit major character status. But then, look how long it took Amy to get there...

January An original video animation (OVA) based on "Sonic the Hedgehog" is released in Japan. Dr. Eggman decides that the Earth of the Sky on which all of society dwells is a nuisance to the abandoned, dark core below. So he intends to blow that outer layer apart by destroying a thin canal in the arctic regions of the planet that holds the whole thing together. To help him achieve this, he creates plans for a robot duplicate of Sonic...Metal Sonic. But, he needs Sonic's biological data to complete the design, and the only way to do that is to get our hedgehog hero in the right place. Thus, he dupes Sonic into taking a visit to Eggmanland on the dark world below, and kidnaps Sera, the President's daughter, as further incentive. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles fall right into Eggman's trap, and it's now up to them to clean up the mess they started. The movie comes in two thirty-minute videos, "Journey to Eggmanland" and "Sonic vs. Metal Sonic". Published by Wishbone and Taki Corporation, the videos sell for ¥3,980 each. Directed by Kazuho Ikegami.

Seiyuu include Masami Kikuchi (Ah! My Goddess, Gundam, Tenchi Muyo) as Sonic, Hekiru Shiina (Magic Knight Rayearth, Soul Edge, Megami Paradise) as Tails, Yasunori Matsumoto (SD Gundam, Slayers, Virtua Fighter) as Knuckles, Mika Kanai (Iria Zeilam, Pat Labor, Sailor Moon) as Sara, and Junpei Taniguchi as Dr. Eggman.
