The old doc's back at it, this time targeting the jolly folk of Beanville. These hapless beans
are to be turned into devious robot slaves in the Eggman's latest diabolical invention, the Mean
Bean-Steaming Machine! Once mechanized, the poor schnooks will be forced to help Dr. Robotnik
rid the planet of music and fun forever! So where the heck is Sonic?! Probably out working on
games with more decently-conceived storylines, so it's up to you to take on Robotnik's Badniks
and save those beans yourself!

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is probably the most different Sonic game ever released,
and for a very good reason...it isn't a Sonic game at all. The game underneath the
overtones based on The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon show is infact Puyo
Puyo, a Tetris-style falling puzzle game. (Nintendo fans will also know it as
Kirby's Avalanche.)
Compile, a Japanese developer, wanted their masterpiece Puyo Puyo released to western
audiences, but they were afraid the heavily anime-style characters and story would be a bit too
quirky for English-speaking shores. Thus, they worked individually with Sega of America and
Nintendo of America to produce the titles we know as Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and
Kirby's Avalanche, respectively.
The game plays just like any in the falling puzzle genre. Two "beans" fall from the top of the
screen at a time (starting off slowly in the earlier levels, and increasing speed with each
additional level) and into the bin below. Connect four beans of the same color, and those four
beans disappear (onto your opponent's screen in the case of a two-player game), knocking the
other beans down a row and sometimes causing chain reactions. There are a total of thirteen
levels.
The Game Gear version introduced a unique (and tremendously fun) Puzzle Mode, whereby stacks of
beans were pre-set in the bin. Pre-set bean combos would fall from the top, and the challenge
was to figure out a way to eliminate all the on-screen beans in a certain number of moves.
Logically, the puzzles got increasingly difficult as you proceeded...
The theme of the game was based on the popular The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog
cartoon show, and included characters from (or based on the design of) that show: Arms, Frankly,
Humpty, Coconuts, Davy Sprocket, Skweel, Dynamight, Grounder, Spike, Sir Ffuzzy-Logic, Dragon
Breath, Scratch, and of course Dr. Robotnik himself.
