Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car
-- The original boy in blue
fills in for the boys in blue in Sonic's first ever arcade
appearance. In addition to his usual gloves and red striped
sneakers, Sonic dons a cop hat and busts loose in his trusty police
car. To serve, protect, and beat up on fat egg-shaped geniuses with
mustaches! Aw yeah!
--
Gameplay Info -- Now here's an
interesting story: Sonic's first ever arcade appearance was not,
contrary to popular belief, Sega Sonic the Hedgehog Arcade.
It was, in fact, "Waku Waku Sonikku Patokaa", which literally
translates into "energetic Sonic patrol car."
SPC is essentially a "ride" machine for kiddies
with a little mini-game tossed in. Imagine the original Sky Chase
Zone from a top-down view, and replace the Tornado with a police
car. On your permanently set northward journey, you can avoid cars
by moving left and right. You can also jump out the car (after which
you land right back in), but the only use for this feature is to
defeat Robotnik...
The two-minute story sort of plays out in the
course of the action: officer Sonic heads out from the station and
hits the streets, on what appears to be a routine patrol. (On the
way, you encounter a traffic light and must stop to let Flicky and
the gang pass.) Ah, but not even having Sonic join the force will
make you-know-who think twice about causing problems. On the patrol,
you spot a familiar fat figure pushing cars off the street in a
vehicle of his own. All that stuff with Chaos Emeralds, Death Eggs,
and ancient liquid monsters is bad enough, but this is just plain
mean. Looks like it's time to stretch the long arm of the law (and
it's going to be one major stretch to reach around that egg-shaped
gut of Robotnik's). Turn on the siren and lay the chase on the
Doc...the makings of a really bad episode of "World's Scariest
Police Chases"! As per usual, Robotnik can be taken out with a few
spins, just watch out for the bombs he's chucking at you. Whether
you defeat him or not, Sonic eventually drives in to another police
station and says something to you in Japanese.
The game is now over, and you turn to your side
to see a line of four-year olds impatiently awaiting their turns, in
addition to a small crowd of onlookers gazing quizically at you and
your ability to get so worked up over a kiddie game. Freak not,
here's what you do: pat the first four-year old in line on the head
and say: "Okay, it's working now." No no, you can thank me later.

Behind the Screens -- Released
almost immediately after the original Genny Sonic in 1991, Patrol
Car and its twin (a currently unidentifiable rocketship game with a
similar theme) were released in Japanese arcades. For nine years
nobody even knew they existed, and in early 2000 everyone suddenly
started getting vague memories of having played the "lost" Sonic
games...
