In 2012, Ken Penders wrote a post on his message board, claiming that those who derided his work on the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book would cite they were too far from the source material, which he didn’t accept as true critical analysis. So I thought, “hey, I should try to judge this thing on its own merits and write a review about it.” That thought turned into a multi-part, fifty thousand word essay on Mobius: 25 Years Later. Part review, part history, it is certainly one of the more substantial things I ever wrote for the front page of Retro.
Would I do it exactly the same now? No, I don’t think I would. There’s a few shades of snark in here, especially in the first couple, that I would throw out. There’s also the fact that it's structured in a way where it assumes the reader has a basic understanding of the Archie universe and Ken Penders, even if there is context given in later columns. But I think it’s still worth a read, especially as it cites things that no longer exist, as Ken’s website has gone down since it was finished.
