Long ago, in the fabled land of Mobius, there were two children of
eight: Sonic, the hedgehog, and Knuckles, the echidna. Both grew up
separate from each other in relative peace.
Then one day on the Floating Island, two brothers arrived--HorizontAl
and VertiCal. They set up a special summer camp especially for
eight-year-olds, and parents flocked from all over to enroll their
children in the camp.
On the first day, the Guardian Locke brought his son Knuckles to the
camp. "Alright, son," he said, "this is your chance to make an
impression on the other kids here. Get along with them, and you might
make a few valuable friends."
"Sure thing, dad," replied Knuckles, as he wandered off toward the
sign-up desk.
As Knuckles filled out the forms, he noticed a pair of hedgehogs
nearby. "Okay, Sonic," said the older one, "it's time to say goodbye
for now."
"I'll miss ya, Uncle Chuck," said the other, giving him a hug. He
waved to him as he walked toward the sign-up desk.
-->
Later, the children were assigned bunks and given roommates. Knuckles
entered his bunk to see who his roommate was.
It was the hedgehog from the sign-up desk! "Oh, hello," said the
hedgehog. "My name is Sonic."
"My name's Knuckles," he replied. "I guess we're roommates, eh?"
"Yup. Well, I guess we'd better get used to being together. We'll
have to share this room for the whole summer. By the way, the
stereo's mine. You can use it whenever you want, unless I'm using it."
"Okay, no problemo."
-->
Within days, the two had settled in. It was two in the morning, and
Knuckles had just gotten in from a long day's activities. He plopped
into bed to try to get some sleep, when...
THUMP-BUMP BA DA DUMP BUMP THUMP!
Sonic's stereo was blasting! Knuckles growled, but he politely
covered his head with his pillow and tried to get to sleep.
No use. He ignored it unsuccessfully for an hour or two, then he sat
up angrily.
"GO - TO - SLEEP!!" he shouted, heaving a pillow at Sonic, then
plopping back under the covers. He knew it didn't work. He heard
Sonic laugh quietly then return to whatever it was he was doing.
-->
This kept up through the weeks, weeks turning into months, until at
last camp was almost over. Knuckles sighed in relief as he walked up
to the sign-out desk and turned in his bunk key. He was about to
return home, when...
"Hey, KNUCKLES!"
Knuckles flinched. It was Sonic. He had pretended to be civil to the
hedgehog all this time, and apparently that made them "friends."
"Knuckles?"
"What?" he asked reluctantly.
"I need a favor."
Knuckles sighed. He had constantly been giving Sonic "favors" with
little reimbursement. "What now?"
"I need your help. My Uncle Chuck is going to come soon, and he's
going to think I've been improving while I was here."
"So?" Knuckles shrugged. "Haven't you been? That was the point of
coming."
"Well, actually, I was supposed to improve my speed, but I haven't
improved much at all."
"Well, what did Al and Cal have to say?"
"You want to know my GPA?"
That was the Goal Point Accumulation score, the number of points out
of 4 that one's improvement was based on. "What?"
"1.9."
Knuckles groaned. "So, what do you want me to do about it?"
"I need you to forge a letter. It has to basically say that I've made
it into the Honor Club with my GPA of 3.57, and congratulations and
all that. I'll pay you for it."
Knuckles knew about money. It wasn't incredibly valuable to him, but
it wouldn't hurt having some, either, although he doubted Sonic would
follow through and pay him. Still, if it would get him off his
back....
"Fine," Knuckles said reluctantly, "I'll do it."
"Great! I need it by tomorrow. They're supposed to send them out
today."
"Okay, whatever," Knuckles said. Then he thought a moment. "Why is
this so important to you?"
Sonic frowned. "You don't know my Uncle Chuck. This was my chance to
impress him! If I don't, he's going to marry me off. I won't have a
life anymore."
"Who to?"
"Some girl named Sally. Igh! I know her, and I *KNOW* we won't get
along at ALL. I can't let him force me into a loveless relationship
like that!"
Knuckles rolled his eyes. If he knew the consequences, he thought,
it's HIS fault he screwed up this summer... And given the MANY girls
Sonicmet this summer that he "loved" (and broke up with in a day),
Knuckles thought it was a deserving punishment.
Oh, well. He agreed, and if it would get him to shut up already...
-->
That afternoon, Knuckles found an old letterhead in the trash from
another kid who had already gotten her notice. He took it to the
camp's computer room and typed up a fake body, addressed to Sonic's
place, then made a similarly fake envelope. The new letter he pasted
over the old letter and got it photocopied in the camp's library,
then he mailed the thing off to Sonic.
Then, he finally went home.
Later that night, Knuckles discovered he had a slight fever and
decided to spend the day in bed to recover. It threw his sleep
schedule off, and he spent the next night the next night tossing and
turning until 6 in the morning. When he finally drifted off to sleep,
he was in bliss....
Until a sharp blow from above knocked him awake.
"Ow!" he cried, awaking with a start. Looking up, there was Sonic.
"Hey, there!" said the hedgehog. "Did you get it done?"
Knuckles growled, looking at the clock. It read just before 8. He'd
gotten less than two hours of sleep! "Yes..." he sneered.
"Oh, good. Did you send it?"
"Of course..."
"When do you think it'll get there?"
"I don't know!" Knuckles was bordering on psychotic.
"Well, thanks. Mind if I pay you next time?"
Knuckles didn't care. If he never saw the hedgehog again, he wouldn't
care. In fact, if he ever saw him again, he thought he might beat his
brains out!
-->
HorizontAl and VertiCal looked at each other. "Hah!" laughed a voice
from above. Scatter snickered and took the Al and Cal sock puppets
off his hands. He snapped his fingers, erasing the memory of their
encounter from both hedgehog and echidna but leaving the feeling of
anger.
"Well," Scatter thought. "Maybe THAT will explain it now!"
