Author's note: An exciting and unusual plot twist unfolds... at least, I HOPE it's unusual. How about, "It would be unusual to find a completely new plot summary, 'cause all the good ones are taken"? This is a rewritten update on the original version. * * * "...connect the bedistor to the mainframe... Place the K-series megafuse in this part HERE..." The tiny room was filled with what most normal people would bluntly call 'junk', and sprawled on the floor was a red-headed woman somewhere in her mid-twenties working industriously on some project or other. Her hands moved with marvelous speed and dexterity, finishing the blunt of the device in mere minutes. "...and the good fromitz board goes in slot two... There! Finally complete! Now to find Da--" At once, the device she had been working on lit up, catching her off guard. "Yaah!" she screamed, electricity surging through her body. She jumped to unplug the device, but it was too late. The current sent her into a harsh state of shock, but that wasn't all. The fromitz board exploded, causing an abnormal tear in space and time that pulled her into an alter-plane of Reality. As soon as she disappeared, the tear resealed itself, as if nothing had ever happened. Just then, the door opened, and a confused young man peeked inside. "Terri?" ______________________________ In a small village called Knothole, a short-tailed squirrel stared in the mirror and groaned. "Oh, this CAN'T be right..." A blue hedgehog looked to the princess, concerned. "Is something wrong, Sal?" "Oh, nothing," she replied. "It's just that... I think I'm getting shorter!" "What?? That's crazy! Look!" He walked over to her. "You're just as tall on me as you were for sixteen YEARS!" "Yeah, Sonic. You wish." The princess sighed. "But it seems so odd..." Abruptly, a peculiar ripping sound tore through the area, like a cross between thunder and really loud fireworks. Both squirrel and hedgehog glanced up from their preoccupations to ponder the occurence. "Hold that thought, Sal. Sounds like something's amiss." Running outside, the pair looked around. "I think it came from the Anger Point area!" "Are you sure, Sonic?" "Well," the hedgehog said, pointing toward the mountain, "there's that big Black Hole-lookin' thing hangin' over it!" Sally rolled her eyes. "Oh." She withdrew her binoculars to examine this strange occurrence. "The structure... resembles... the Void..." "The VOID?? Baaaad news, Sal." "BUT, Sonic... BUT, it's not. It more resembles... a space-time flux." "Say WHAT??" The squirrel sighed, turning to him. "You remember the N5?" "Of course! What about 'em?" "The Dimension Door THEY came through was sort of like a plain old picket fence gate, and the Void is more like a whirlpool or vortex..." Sally returned her gaze to Anger Point. "And this... this... THING is kind of a cross between the two. And DEFINITELY a different color." Sonic tapped his foot impatiently. "So what are you gettin' at, Sal?" "Urrr..." Sally felt like tearing out her hair. "NEVERMIND, Sonic... Let's just go check it out." ______________________________ Something that looked remarkably similar to the Void hovered above Anger Point. From within the new Void spewed a humanoid figure, the tear closing itself immediately afterward. Several minutes passed before she came around. "Ungh..." she moaned. "What... happened?" With a struggled effort to stand, she looked around. "Hmm. A mountain? And there's a city in that direction..." Dusting herself off, the redheaded woman pondered the day's events. When she arrived at work, her co-worker Darian Grey asked her to give him a hand with his latest project. She followed it to the letter, but somehow-- Shaking her head, she stared at the city. "I wonder what happened, and where I am now?" She shrugged. "Maybe they can tell me a few things in the city..." As she started down the mountain, voices from behind her cued the presence of other beings. No sooner was she out of the vicinity than two rodent-like humanoids appeared on the scene. "That's odd..." remarked the first, a short-tailed squirrel. "Whatever it was is... gone." "And good riddance, I say! Well, let's go home now--" The squirrel caught the other's arm, that of a blue hedgehog. "NO, Sonic... This could be serious! For instance, what if it's that mongoose again? Or worse?" "Oh, no... Not that Scatter guy! I HATE pies in my face!" "WELL, then. Why don't we find out for CERTAIN??" The hedgehog slumped over, depressed. "Aw, I don't like complex stuff like this! It makes my head hurt..." She grinned. "Doesn't take a lot, does it, Sonic?" ______________________________ Quite some distance away, in the mechanized metro pointedly dubbed Robotropolis, the scene was being set for what would prove to be an unusual turn of events... "Doctor Robotnik..." The voluminous villain turned to face his lackey. "What is it NOW, Snively? I'm in the middle of testing the R--" "The surveillance cams have picked up a lifeform in the area, sire." "WHAT??" Robotnik screamed. "Not the HEDGEHOG???" "As a matter of fact, no, sire. In fact, it appears to be... human!" "ANOTHER human?" The evil doctor leapt from his seat, taking to the control panel to instruct the 'bots. "Security! Priority one, human! Track down and control, dead or ali--" His voice trailed off as he happened to glance at the monitors. For the briefest of moments, the villain was totally awe-struck. Then he snapped out of it. "No... Disregard previous instructions. Priority one, human, but make sure she is captured. ALIVE." ______________________________ "Oof! Great going, Terri..." muttered the redhead. She rubbed her ankle from where she fell. Something in the back of her mind told her she wouldn't find any help here... probably the numerous androids chasing after her waving guns and stuff. Luckily, they didn't shoot at her. From her hiding place in an alleyway, Terri watched the 'droids' actions. Gunfire from another direction caught her attention, and she carefully glanced around to see who it was. "AAAAAAAAAAA!!" sounded a battletorn cry, and a small band of rebels (she guessed that's what they were since they were shooting the androids) appeared in her view. Kracka-SHOOOM! Several of the 'droids exploded in a flash of light as laser fire passed through their vital system parts. Terri ducked as metal went flying, in addition to an unseen furred shape. The latter fell into the same alley she took shelter in. "Oh!" it said, prompting Terri to meet its gaze. She sized it up, identifying it as a grey wolf-like humanoid. "How odd..." she mused, taking a closer inspection. "Get AWAY!! You won't take me!!" The wolf menacingly held up a gun in defense. Terri threw up her arms in the universal gesture of surrender. "It's okay! I won't hurt you..." The wolf looked again. "Wait... you couldn't work for him..." She raised an eyebrow. "Uh-huh. Does that mean you won't shoot me?" In a gesture of trust, the wolf lowered her gun, extending a paw in greeting. "Something tells me that you are an ally. My name is Lupe." Nodding hesitantly, she took the paw in her own hand. "My name is Terri, and would somebody please tell me what's going on??" Before either could exchange any more information, a nearby explosion sent another furry beast flying into the alley... Right at Terri. "YAAAHH--OOF!" The second wolf collided with Terri, throwing her against a wall. The impact gave her a bad concussion, and she quickly fell into unconsciousness. "Oh, no!" Lupe helped the second wolf stand then ran to help Terri. "Quick, Dante! We need to get her to safety!" The male wolf appeared hesitant but, nevertheless, was obedient. He picked up Terri and, under Lupe's cover, carried her from the battlefield... ______________________________ "EEK!" shrieked a young skunk. "What's happening???" A metallic-armed fox looked up from his computer work. "What??" The little skunk whirled about, showing off the yellow sundress she was wearing. "See, Davey? At the hem, it almost reaches my ankles, but only a few days ago, it was exactly at my knees!" From the other side of the room, Davey glared at her irritatedly then returned to his studies on the Mobian InterNet. "It looks just fine on you, Nina. I wouldn't sweat it." "Easy for YOU to say! You're at least twenty zillion feet tall! You could shrink and no one would notice at all!" "Shrink?" Davey cocked his ears in confusion. "What do you mean?" Just then, the door flew open, and a woodchuck barged in. "Hurry! To the infirmary, now!" "Is something wrong, Rosie?" asked Davey, rising to his feet. "No time to explain now! We have an injured patient!" Davey shrugged calmly. "Who is it? Bunnie? Antoine, I hope?" "No! A human!" "WHAT???" The three promptly ran to the infirmary, to see who this newcomer could be. CERTAINLY not Robotnik or Snively. "Oh, my..." seemed to be the common response of anyone just entering the infirmary. Many jaws fell slack to see this new female human. Suddenly, the door opened, and two more entered. "Hey!" shouted Sonic. Where IS everyo--" The hedgehog and squirrel stopped in their tracks seeing the crowd gathered around. "Uh... are we interrupting something?" A wolf walked forward, kneeling before the squirrel. "Princess Sally..." "Dante!" the leader of Knothole started. "What brings you here?" He rose. "While raiding Robotropolis, Lupe stumbled upon this human hiding in an alley. Unfortunately, a strong blow threw me into the same alley, knocking her against a wall. I fear she has suffered a terrible concussion, and..." Sally turned to the others. "Well?? You heard him! Somebody help her out! What's wrong??" This spurred some to action. At lengths, the human awoke from her coma. "Oh... my head..." Then she noticed her saviors. Every single one of them was an animal-like humanoid. "Ooookay..." she muttered. "Gee," complained Sonic. "ANOTHER one! Just like YOU, Davey..." Something about that statement made the fox snap. "Hmm..." he muttered, sounding worried. "What's your name, stranger?" "Uhm... Terri. Terri Alex Riordan." The bionic fox nodded, his suspicions lessening. "No, I guess I was wrong..." Sally glanced at him. "Wrong about what, Dave?" "Oh, nothing. It was nothing." But Davey lied.
