The top thing that keeps Planeswalker from being a Yu-Gi-Oh rip-off is the switch from Shonen to Shojo; from a guy's title to a girl's title. That is done by emphasising on the character development and the inter-character interactions rather than the action. (It is my hopes that I give both area equal focus.) In fact, the parts in Yu-gi-oh I like most is the interactions between Yugi and Yami. In Planeswalker, the Jamie/Jasmine connection takes center stage.
