The Gonterman Archive

The Art

art
/ärt/
noun

1. the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

2. the various branches of creative activity, such as painting, music, literature, and dance.

Oftentimes, when one thinks of a piece of art, they think of a single, individual image. The Mona Lisa. The Starry Night. Dogs Playing Poker. Something that could be hung up in a museum, where passer-bys can look upon it for hours, contemplating its deeper meaning. While it is irresponsible to not call the written word or serialized visuals art, it is also hard to argue against the majesty of a single piece, crafted by hand, meant to be studied for generations to come.

David Gonterman is no stranger to creating single pieces of art. A sketch, a colored image, an attempt at a dynamic statement. Sometimes, these single pieces tie into his larger world building, sketchbooks related to novels or webcomics that build the world of Foxfire Studios. Other times, they are flights of fancy, something quickly made to amuse for a moment.

Just how much art has David Gonterman created over the years? Well, the purpose of this archive is to try and answer just that. Below are the singles and the sketchbooks, grouped together with commentary from the creator, where applicable.

Squeaky Clean Furry Archive (1996)
Long before it became Yerf, the original anthropomorphic art archive accepted drawings by anyone who wished to submit. Gonterman was sure to make use of the archive, until he was no longer allowed to do so. Pulled from archive.org, while the images are broken in the above snapshot, the descriptions still exist, waiting until the day it can be restored to its former glory.
Assorted Artwork (1997-2002)
Hopping over to Simplenet and beyond, the art continued to flow. Here is a smattering of that which has survived. Includes art featured on The Gonterman Shrine.
Foxfire Universe Sketchbook (2003)
Presented in its original form, a collection of images that tied into the Planeswalker era of Gonterman’s webcomic career.
Sketchbook Vol. 2 (2003)
A partially-broken version of a second sketchbook continuing where the first left off. Originally part of the Foxfire Universe Multi-Title Notebook.
/FoxStudios/jbriz/ (2004)
A fan of roleplaying, Gonterman was an active user and contributor over at the Disney Echo group of sites. During the “Save Disney” campaign, he sketched up a number of drawings featuring Johnny Briz, storing the work in progress over on his furnation site.
Scarlet P.I. @DeviantArt
His signature character back for round two, a number of images were drawn up by Davey to show off the fursuited vixen. Includes sketchwork for the unproduced Scarlet P.I. Remix.
Lost Boy Found @DeviantArt
The culmination of a years long adventure, Lost Boy Found’s sketchbook was a look into the creative process of Gonterman’s first full length novel.
Blood and Metal @DeviantArt
Rebooting the saga that made him infamous, David Gonterman wanted to insure that the second time around would be the best it could. Focusing on world building, the gallery includes the sketchbook, as well as the illustrations for both novels.
Johnny Briz @DeviantArt
Gonterman’s longest running character, it was only natural that Johnny would show up in the gallery, even before the development of The Ballad of Johnny Briz.
Miscellaneous @DeviantArt
Everything that’s fit to print, but doesn’t quite belong in the above categories. Disney, Dungeons & Dragons, and so much more.
