Purple's Picks - Seek 'n' Find with Infoseek Upcoming Chats - Father's Day, Q&A, and Newsgroups The End - How to contact us or unsubscribe ||| THE MESS O' E-MAIL || | I would like to apologize to subscribers of the ANSWERMAN INTERNET EXTRA for the mess of e-mail some of you received last Sunday. Although I'd like to blame it all on the cat, I can't -- mea culpa. My auto-responder (a program which was supposed to answer my e-mail while I was on vacation) got in a fight to the death with the AnswerMan mailing list software. The result was that several unwanted messages went to most everyone on the list. The problem was resolved quickly by a sharp-eyed CJ (thanks, Charlie!), and steps have been taken to be sure that sort of thing does not happen again. Again, I apologize for overabundance of e-mail and any inconvenience. From now on, you'll get ONE copy of the newsletter each week. :) I'm now off to Washington D.C. to learn all about the nifty new tools & toys that AOL will be adding for your Internet-surfing pleasure. I'll let you know soon what's in store. While I'm there, I'll be checking my e-mail myself -- I'm sworn off auto-responders. :) :) :) ||| PURPLE'S PICKS || | by Sarah Nehrer (CJ Purple) Hi again everyone! Hope everyone had fun searching for "stuff" with Yahoo! and Lycos over the past couple of weeks. Today we'll take a look at Infoseek Guide (http://www.infoseek.com). Infoseek was the topic of a recent Tourbus issue because Patrick Crispen says it's one of his favorite sites! Tourbus is a popular electronic Mailing List that comes out twice a week with reviews of helpful and interesting sites on the Web. You can find out more about it and how to subscribe to it by going to Keyword: Mailing Lists and click on the "Our Pick" button. Infoseek offers two ways to search: the Lycos way, ie. by typing in a search term and clicking the "Seek" button; and the Yahoo! way, ie. by browsing through topics. The topics available on Infoseek are: Arts & Entertainment, Business & Finance, Computers & Internet, Education, Government & Politics, Health & Medicine, Living, News, Reference, Sciences & Technology, Sports & Travel. The very cool thing about Infoseek is that you can direct it to search the WWW, or Usenet, or e-mail addresses, or Reuters News Service, or a Company Directory, or Infoseek Select Sites or Web FAQs! Big Yellow, accessible from the Infoseek home page, is a database of 16 million business yellow pages entries. Fast Facts links you to references on how to find e-mail addresses, stock quotes, company information and street maps. Other links from Infoseek's home page are a "how to search" guide and a download of the free beta version of their new personal productivity application called iSeek. This program allows you to launch Web searches from your desktop without first opening a Web browser and going to a search page! It's available for Macintosh and Windows. Finally, there's Infoseek Personal, which can reached directly via http://personal.infoseek.com or from the Infoseek home page. This is a free personalized news service. All you have to do is fill out a -long- questionnaire about your interests and the nice folks at Infoseek will create an online newspaper for you that includes general interest news as well as the specific kinds of news in which you demonstrated interest on the questionnaire! Well, that's about it for today! Next week we'll look at another one or two search engines, and then we'll probably shift gears and talk about some other nifty Web sites. If you have any ideas about what you would like to see reviewed here, please let me know at "cjpurple@aol.com." ||| UPCOMING ANSWERMAN CHATS || Chat live with AnswerMan in these hour-long sessions || Now four times a week -- check out the new Sunday chats! | Pick an interesting topic & bring your questions | Keyword: AM CHAT Internet Q&A - Wednesday, June 12, 9PM ET Have questions about the Internet?
