This week, I'm focusing on great sites for your computer. I don't know if you're a Windows person or a Mac person, but I've got a big helping of top-notch sites for you either way. But before we head in that direction, a couple of random notes. First of all, it looks like we all made it through last Friday, the so-called Hackers' Day, intact. I haven't heard of any serious damage, just some junk e-mail and a few annoyed chat room participants. If you want to read the full scoop, news.com has a story on the topic, at http://www.news.com/News/Item/0%2C4%2C7965%2C00.html Also, I'm thrilled to announce that we've enhanced and overhauled the index of AnswerMan member web sites. Check it out -- just go to keyword ANSWERMAN and click on the "Member Web Sites" button. Member Sites are web pages created by AnswerMan users -- there are more than 2,000 sites there. Some are quaint sites offering pictures of their creator's family and pets, others offer great information on whatever the member knows about -- books, magic, video games, religion, anything and everything. The sites are indexed alphabetically, and new additions are marked so you can quickly find the new stuff. (And starting next week, I'll be sharing my picks for the best Member Web Sites.) If you're created a web site, be sure to go to the Member Web Sites and register your page. If you've already done that, be patient while we add it -- we're still a little behind on adding new sites since the transition to the enhanced index. OK, as promised, this week's focus is great web sites for your computer. I've included a few picks here, and there are plenty more at keyword AM FOCUS. If you've been reading this newsletter for a few weeks, you already know that AOL 3.0 users can use Internet tools through America Online, allowing you to expand the range of what you can do with AOL. For Windows users, the Consummate Winsock Apps List is a huge list of Internet software. It's at http://www.cwsapps.com/. The equivalent for Mac users is the Mac Orchard at http://www.spectra.net/~dsaur/orchard.html. Web browsers, IRC clients, telnet...if you can name it, it's listed in those sites. I love getting newsletters via e-mail. Mac users shouldn't go a week without reading TidBITS magazine. TidBITS covers software reviews, features about new products and insightful commentary about the Macintosh. You can catch it on the Web at http://www.tidbits.com/ or you can get TidBITS via e-mail: send e-mail to info@tidbits.com for information on how to subscribe for free. Windows users: read WindoWatch at http://www.windowatch.com/. WindoWatch is an online magazine, published ten times a year, focusing on Windows and Internet issues. The magazine supports all flavors of Windows. And if you're not as much of a Win95 guru as you want to be, check out 1,001 Windows 95 Tips: Operating System Shortcuts at http://www.zdnet.com/~pccomp/1001tips/windows.html. Mac users: if you like to download new software once in a while, but you don't like slogging through lists of hundreds of badly described new files available at FTP sites, then you'll love MacPicks at http://www.ualberta.ca/~mmalowan/Picks.html. This site features capsule reviews of quality new shareware and free programs for the Mac, and is updated weekly. Those are a few of my favorites -- yes, there are plenty more great sites for people who love their computers. More are listed at keyword AM FOCUS, and I'll be adding still more throughout the week.
