Zero was equally distasteful as he shallowly breathed in the musty air. Patches of dirt, grime, and other disgusting substances clung to their armor. The grossly contaminated water level grew higher as they went deeper into the sewer, not to mention the decaying stench... " Zero, I think I'm going to puke..." Gurgled X, his face a slight green. " Mm-hmm." Replied Zero through closed lips. He was obviously trying not to breathe in the stinking air, not very successfully though, as every few minutes, he had to take in one big breath. " What time is it?" " 1.30 a.m., damn, I'm sick of breathing!" " Ugh, same here." The conversation ended there, as each reploid trekked side by side through greenish slime, their feet making squelching noises in the green swamp. Then, as they turned a bend, all remaining light from the outside world disappeared. " X, I really do not want to know what might be lying in wait for us here..." " Neither do I." " Well, lighting my saber might give away our location..." " What?" " I didn't stealth-systemize my saber OK?" Said Zero through clenched teeth. " Great, we'll just continue our expedition into the sewer without light..." " Shut up and continue walking!" And so, the two friends followed their instincts, turning right and left, taking wrong turns sometimes, but usually on the right track. Finally, after one or two hours, our heroes finally found themselves at the end of the tunnel, from which a faint blue light emerged... " 2.45 a.m." " I never want to go through that again." " No time to rest, we'll need to be extra careful, now that we're in enemy territory." " Zero, what's your status?" Checked X, flipping his control panel, " I am running low on energy and plasma levels." " Same here X, where are the energy canisters?" X threw his partner a silver canteen filled with green liquid, and took one for his own self. Each quickly downed the contents before maneuvering around the room. It was barely illuminated by an eerie blue light hovering above a marble pillar, engraved with serpentine carvings. The blue light flickered as it rotated. The room held marble pillars, each bearing the design of some of the greatest mavericks, or X-hunters, as some would put it, ever known. From the faint lighting, X and Zero could just make out some familiar faces. " Vile, Dr. Doppler, Dr. Wily... " Murmured X in awe. " I was one of them once..." Whispered Zero sadly, as he stared at a pillar. Engraved on it was a carving of him, brandishing his saber in one hand, the other grabbing a dead reploid, X...little did he know of his fate... " We all make mistakes sometime." Said X, putting an arm on his friend's shoulder. " Don't worry about it. Now lets go before the whole world blows up because of Sigma!" << Prev Topic Next Topic >> Author Subject Seven X The Resident Reploid Regular ! posts: 83 (10/10/00 4:19:48 am) Reply Mistaken and Unforgiven(X-battle fic pt2) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- They crept in and out of different rooms, not encountering any enemy yet. Feeling a little nervous, the two hunters sneaked round a corner. Zero quietly drew his saber while X charged his buster. X cautiously looked behind, his ears and eyes sharp and alert as a rabbit's. " Maverick approaching." " What is it?" " One of those Vile look-alike wannabes." " I can take him down easy." Gloated Zero, as he leapt from the dark corner, executing a powerful Ryuenjin, destroying the surprised maverick before he could utter a single plea for help. Zero sheathed the stained saber back into its scabbard. " Quit fooling around and let's go!" Said X, grabbing his friend's arm. " Wait, not yet!" " What now?" " Look, security camera. Would you do the honors?" Offered Zero, extending his hand in a ballroom-like stance. " My utmost pleasure." Said X evilly, letting go of the charged plasma missile at the camera. The silent blast caught the camera right smack in the center, making it explode and singeing the wall around it. "Now lets go." They headed down the presently deserted corridor. " Engage missiles 12-DX and 45-DX." " All clear. Missiles ready for launch." " Good..." Said a dark figure looming towards a control panel. Sigma. The mess of wires and circuits on his face gleamed in the glare of the screen. He pressed the button and snickered. " Soon you'll be nothing more than ashes..." " ZERO! Watch out!" Cried X as he ducked below the heat-seeking missile. " X, you worry too much! Let me whack this one into oblivion! SHIPPUGA!" Zero dashed towards the oncoming missile, stopping it with a quick cut of his saber. Shards of metal flew everywhere. " You're going down!" Yelled X to the other missile as he charged his buster. " Icicle Tower!" The second missile froze into a large iceberg. It fell and dashed into pieces on the dirty floor. X somersaulted, dodging the shrapnels of ice-metal. " We ought to work on "intruding territory" skills..." Mumbled Zero, as they sped down the corridor, coming to a large wooden door. Unlocked? The two reploids cautiously stepped in, half expecting a maverick to come out from nowhere. They prepared their weapons, muscles tense, ready to retaliate at the slightest sounds. The door slammed shut, and a sheet of metal covered the inside part. X and Zero started to panic... " Well, what do we have here?" Said a female, slightly high-pitched voice. They whirled around, and came face to face with someone they didn't expect. Author Subject Seven X The Resident Reploid Regular ! posts: 87 (10/13/00 12:48:32 am) Reply Mistaken and Unforgiven pt.3. If anyone cares... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- " Iris! What are you doing here?" Yelled Zero. " Did you think I'd ever forgive you for destroying my brother?" " Iris, I had to..." " Shut up! Did you ever think about how I would feel? All you've ever cared about was yourself." " Listen, I never wanted to but-" Zero was cut off by Iris. A large blast of flame streaked towards his unprotected face. " ARGH!" He barely managed to leap out of the way, his face streaked with blood from the wound which the blast made... " Missed!" Iris spat. " Iris please stop!" " No...you never cared about me, you selfish, overgrown child! He was my only relation...after that day, I had to fend for myself, at least, until I had to battle you..." " How did you survive...?" Zero choked, remembering that scene in vivid color. Iris lay in a pool of her own blood... " Oh, after you just left me there, Sigma came along and brought me home. Since then, he's been like a father to me." Iris smirked. " He even made me a new cannon, trained me patiently, built up my resistance...I'm practically immune to your attacks now!" Zero gulped back the tears. " Quit jabbering and lets fight!" Screamed X, charging his buster. " You'll never make it back alive, face the facts boys." Sneered Iris, as she charged her own cannon, from fire, she switched to lethal metal claws that sprang from her wrists. " Prepare to die!" X let go of the plasma blast. However, Iris soared straight through the blue halo, barely singed, as she leapt for X's head. He dodged, the claws scratched his helmet, revealing torn metal and wires. Brown hair was exposed in the cracks. He switched his buster to Twin Slasher and charged it to full level. " If this doesn't kill her, I don't know what will!" Seethed X as he aimed at Iris's head. " X! NO! STOP!" Cried Zero. Iris stared in surprise, as she stopped in the middle of a leap, the pinkish-red beam flying towards her. She couldn't move, the beam edging closer... " Zero! Get out of the way!" X called out. " This time, I'm letting go Double Cyclones! CHARGED!" The green pillars of wind melded with the charged twin slasher, just before it hit. The blast hit Iris squarely in the chest, the wind swirling around her, the pink beams taken together with the force of the wind, draining Iris's energy... A long scream echoed round the walls as the blast took on its final, most powerful stages... " Iris...no..." " Zero?" " Iris...why? Why?" " Zero, don't. Please, I...I-" " Don't start on me now X!" Zero cut him off. " Why do I have to go through these, not some other people who deserve it more? Why me?" " I'm sorry..." " Sorry means nothing to me anymore." " Zero, don't be so hard on yourself. You're not the only one..." " Oh?" " Remember Protoman? Left home, never came back, no news of him until now? I don't even know wether he's alive or not." " I guess you're right..." " Now that's the Zero I know!" " Let's go kick some maverick butt!" Zero shouted, the infamous twinkle in his eye shone. " Yeah!" An exit appeared. X and Zero dashed out in blue and red blurs, leaving behind a red arm cannon, lying upon a pile of ashes... He gulped as he approached the junction of two corridors. One would lead them closer to the confrontation of Sigma... They leapt into the well-lit corridor. No one was around. X lowered his buster. " I guess we're safe for now..." Said X " "For now" are the keywords." X sighed and turned around, looking for surveillance cameras. He saw none. Could it be a trap? " I guess we're safe for now..." X's voice crackled through a speaker as his image formed on a glowing screen. " You're right X...you are safe...for now...." Sigma sneered evilly. " Storm Eagle and Jet Stingray, prepare for a little meeting with some "friends"..." The doors on each end of the corridor opened. The two mavericks leapt out. Storm Eagle hurled five Double Cyclones at our heroes. They leapt out of the tornadoes' warpath. X merely rolled his eyes as he leapt into the air. His armor glowed a bright orange, as it slowly morphed to white. Zero below him smiled evilly. " Nova..." " Oh no..." Muttered Storm Eagle, shaking his head back and forth disbelievingly. " Strike!" X yelled, wings spread from his back as he soared down towards the maverick, engulfed in a golden aura. All Storm Eagle saw in his last breath was X, grinning and- Storm fell on the floor, dead. Eyes open. Jet Stingray sent his minions after Zero. X was still hovering in the air. He nodded at Zero. Zero flashed his infamous smile, as he raised his fist... " Die hunter!" Yelled Jet Stingray as he himself streaked towards Zero. " Get ready!" Shouted Zero as he slammed his fist into the ground. " Rakuhouha!" Lasers sprang from the vibrating ground and rammed into Jet Stingray. He froze, and finally exploded into a million pieces. Zero stood up. " Well, that wasn't so bad." Grinned Zero at his hovering friend. " Yeah. If it would only be this easy against Sigma..." Said X. " Yeah..." Mused Zero. They ran into the right door. Charred metal was all that was left of X's and Zero's old foes. Author Subject Seven X The Resident Reploid Regular ! posts: 113 (11/11/00 8:34:26 am) Reply Mistaken yet Unforgiven(part5.) X and Zero's eyes were closing, both slightly bloodshot with fatigue and lack of sleep. It was all they could do to keep their feet from dragging. X walked on beside Zero, fists clenched. " If we ever get there, I'll be dead by then." " Don't be so pessimistic X, look at where we are!" " We...the main control room?" " X, keep your eyes peeled, Sigma won't leave this place uncovered for long!" Blue light from a large screen glared onto them. A crackling noise spurred X and Zero to turn around. Little flecks of color started to appear on the screen. " I see you've found my laboratory..." Sigma's evil face leered in the screen. " Please, make yourself at home...in pieces!" The two reploids prepared themselves, but the shock was too great. The floor capsized as the fell into ebony darkness, hearing the last few strains of Sigma's laughter. X started cursing under his breath. " Damn Sigma, that bastard's gonna pay for what he bloody did to me and Protoman!" " X, don't swear, it makes you age faster." " Shut up! You can hell leave me alone! I've tried so hard to get myself alive here, I'm starting to think that I won't even be able to survive this fall!" " X, stop acting like that." " And what bloody business is that of yours? I do what I want to do, and no one needs to bother about me!" " Listen X!" Yelled Zero, " You're wearing out my patience! I know what you're going through! Don't think I'm not! I have my own problems too! So, listen up, you are going to shut your trap and quit reminding me of my own problems, or, I'm going to be forced to make you shut up!" Zero pulled out his saber. The green light illuminated his face...his-tear stained face? " X, I lost Iris twice, she's gone for good, but you still have a hope. Protoman may not be dead for all you know. I hate seeing people helpless, because I was once, and I never want to be again." He resheathed his saber, and the two reploids fell through in silence, as if the journey downwards would never end... BLAM! Zero landed head-first onto stony ground. X landed on his right shoulder. They hoped that they were not hurt too much. X tried to stand, but was only rewarded with fresh cries of pain as he grabbed his shoulder. Zero, however, was screaming in agony as he got onto his knees, yelling as he grabbed his neck. X gasped. Zero's head was bent at an unusual angle. Any more movement and he could be paralysed for life. X limped over to his partner. " Hey, you better stay here." X's eyes filled with worry. " I'll go on my own. It's not safe for you to go along." " No...X, I...I can't...let you...go...not alone...AAAAH!" Zero screamed again. " I'll be fine, trust me." Said X, as he prepared to go off. " Wait, X!" Called out Zero. Blood was oozing from a covered wound on his head. A pool was already forming. " What?" " X, if I should...well...leave, take my saber, at least...if not for protection, you'll remember me." " No, Zero, you're not going to die...not ever." " Just take it...and...go." " OK...here. Take my arm cannon. At least you'll be able to defend yourself for a while. Try not to move." X carefully pulled Zero into a sitting position. He could now protect himself from any incoming danger. For a while, at least. X gave a parting glance to his injured friend, and rushed off. " X...thank you..." Said Zero to himself, his blood trickling down his neck as he fell unconscious...
