"Give it up," the green-eyed, black-haired human boy said. "No one's home." "Are you sure this is the right place, Masked?" The silver female echidna, with the dark blue eyes asked. She shifted the small, one-year-old red echidna to her other shoulder. "Yes, Moon. This is the place." Masked Echidna replied. "It looks like no one's lived in this for years," Gabriel Shadows muttered. "What a dump." The door creaked open. The echidna that opened the door blue. His light blue eyes flicked over each of the visitors. He was wearing jean shorts, and his shoes reminded Masked just a little of Sonic's. He pushed at his spiky bangs. Then he swallowed. "KTE? Who the heck have you got with you?" he asked. The last traveler, the red, 13-year-old guardian look-alike stepped forward. "Hey, buddy, how ya been?" "Jeez...where ya been, KTE?" the echidna asked. "It's been chaos here...utter chaos. Enerjak took over the island!" "And you're hiding out here, eh, Rage?" Masked asked. "Who are you?" Rage demanded. "I'm the Masked Echidna. Call me Masked." Masked replied. He gestured to the silver echidna. "This is Moon the Echidna, and.." he nodded to Gabe. "This is Gabriel Shadows." "I'm Rage," Rage replied. He blinked. "But I guess you already knew that, Masked." He turned to the one left unintroduced. "Is this some kind of ambush, KTE? Why'd you bring all these people here? Where you followed?" "Rage!" Mickey called from Moon's arms. "Mickey? I thought he was captured..." Rage shook his head. "Knuckles is captured, and we need to stop Enerjak," Masked said. "Can we come in, Rage? We need to start planning." "Waitaminute...Masked, was it? We can't just barge in on Enerjak..." Rage began. "It's not just Enerjak." Moon said, as she handed Mikey to Rage. "It's Sailor Evil, ETK, and the other Realm Destroyers." Rage waved them inside the home. He led them to a sitting area. It was dark inside. "Realm Destroyers?" he asked. "A team of people brought together to try to dominate all the alternate realms...either that or destroy them." Moon began, sitting. "What do you know about the story of the Great Powers, Rage?" "Not much, I guess." Rage shrugged. "You got an short version?" "Well...a long time ago...when all the realms were first created, there was seven people that had the task of ensuring they all remained in Balance. These were the first Realm Protectors. They channeled the energies of the Great Powers, and control them through the Master Tools. Now, the need for the Realm Protectors has risen, and so...Gabe and I sent out to find the Master Tools and unite them." Moon paused. "The Vampire Queen Hecate-Chaos wants the Tools for herself, so she can rule all the realms. She created the Realm Destroyers. Their job is to get the Master Tools for her, and to get rid of the Realm Protectors." "Yes," Gabe spoke up. "And there's a prophecy that says: 'Seven less one, and Chaos triumphs'." "Have you found of the Seven?" Rage asked. "Well, we know of three...and we have three Master Tools." Moon swallowed. Then, she looked to KTE. "Can we trust him with the names?" KTE shrugged. "Sure, why not. He is my good buddy." Gabe regarded KTE oddly. "Yeah, it seems everyone's your good buddy today," he muttered. "There's Jack, Selene, and The Chaos Knight." Masked replied. He meet Moon's suspicious eyes evenly. "I've done my research." "Realm Gossip travels faster than ever, I see," Moon muttered. "Well...where are they?" Rage asked. "They should be helping us kick Enerjak's ugly tail." "Well..." Gabe began. "I think Enerjak has the Chaos Knight," Masked said. "Either that, or he *is* the Chaos Knight." "What?!" Moon demanded. "You've got to be kidding me." "No." Masked replied evenly. "I have reason to suspect that the Chaos Knight is none other than Dimitri himself." Gabe snickered. "That's gotta be the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Why would *Enerjak* be a Realm Protector?" Masked paused. "I don't believe he's a real Realm Protector. I think he was just pretending to be. There's no telling how complex this plan of Hecate-Chaos' is." "That's a good point," Moon said softly. She looked at Masked oddly. "Hey, don't look at *me*. I'm on your side, remember?" Masked replied. "We need a plan." Rage said. "If we can come up with something...I know some people that will help." Masked cleared his throat. "I might have an idea..." Chapter Two: Enerjak's Citadel Enerjak looked up as EnerAsh came into the room. "The Guardian maintains that he does not know anything about the location of his missing comrades, or the Fire Ant." EnerAsh sat. "You certainly were not much help," Enerjak replied. "It is of the utmost importance those 'Chaotix' be detained." "If you had completely taken hold of the island, as you led me to believe you had..." EnerAsh began. Julie-su fell out from behind a curtain. "Ouch...!" "What is this?" Enerjak rose, angry. "Julie-su? You dare spy on me?" "My Lord," Julie-su rose, purple-tipped bangs falling in her violet eyes. "I did not mean to pry...but I fear that Sailor Evil has ulterior motives...I don't think she has your interests in mind..." EnerAsh blinked green eyes. "Allow me to deal with this matter, Father. I assure you I am more than capable of dealing with one such as Sailor Evil." Enerjak frowned thoughtfully. "Perhaps...since you have knowledge of her that I do not. All right. But understand, I want this taken care of. It is to be resolved immediately." "Yes, Father." EnerAsh nodded. "If you wish it, then it shall be so." He bowed slightly to Enerjak. "Come, Julie-su, tell me of your suspicions." "And then I'll challenge 'the Chaos Knight'." Masked finished. "What do you think?" "The Chaotix will be only too happy to help," Rage replied. "They hate Enerjak almost as much as Knuckles does." Moon nodded. "I like it up until the part about you taking on the Chaos Knight. Have you ever battled Enerjak before, Masked?" "No, but I'm willing to give it a try." Masked replied. The truth was...he was a little nervous, but he had confidence in his own fighting skills. He'd been trained well. Moon nodded. "Well...it's a start." "Great." KTE stood. "Let's go and get the Chaotix." Rage shot KTE a look. "Sure...in a minute. Everyone knows what to do?" "Judging from what you've told me of the Dark Legion's dependency on their technology," Gabe scratched his chin. "It shouldn't be hard to put them into a little bit of a technical glitch." "And the Dingoes can be counted on to help?" Moon asked Rage. "Well, I'm not sure I entirely trust General Stryker, but we need his people to help get the D.L. outta the way. Once they're gone, it's smooth sailing to Enerjak." Rage shrugged. "Yeah, piece of cake...not." "Okay, so you and the Chaotix will contact Stryker and begin the attack on the D.L. strong holds," Masked instructed Rage. "Take Mr. Shadows with you. He can help you scramble their weapons electronic brains...if what he says about his skills are true." "Hecate-Chaos trains her terrorists well, Mr. Masked," Gabe replied sarcastically. "But of course, this is with the expectation that they won't use their knowledge against her." "KTE can come with Masked, and myself." Moon said. "If we need to contact the Realm Protectors once we get inside the Citadel...KTE has a direct link to Jack." "Oh, yeah, we're good buddies." KTE nodded. Masked looked at Moon. "So...you can handle Sailor Evil?" Moon snorted. "That push-over?" She smiled. "I can take care of myself, Masked. I've been doing it for a while now. Can you get me to Julie-Su and Knuckles? We'll need their help." "Why?" KTE demanded. "Knuckles...yeah, I can see why, but Julie-Su?" "Who better to help us fight off the evil Julie-su than the good one?" Moon asked. "Now, once KTE, Julie-su, and I have the Realm Destroyers under control, Masked, you and Knuckles can go after Enerjak." "And once everyone finishes their task, get your tails to Knuckles and I as soon as possible. We're going to need all the help we can get at that level." Masked added. There was a moment of silence. Maybe for prayer for blessing. Maybe to gather strength. Or maybe it was simply for dramatic purposes... Masked was the one to give the final order. "Okay, furries, let's move out." EnerAsh swallowed. This was the closest he'd been to Julie-su in years. Well...he had seen her at the trial...but she was being drug from a court room, and he was being drug in one. He cleared his throat. The sooner he got the dirt on Sailor Evil...the happier 'Father' Enerjak would be. "Tell me your concerns," he said. Julie-su fidgeted nervously. "Okay...you didn't hear this from me...but Sailor Evil keeps sneaking off. When she thinks nobody is looking. I think she has some info on these Master Tool thingys. Something she doesn't want to share with the rest of us. And she does whatever she wants. *She's* the one ordering the Legion around. She's the one calling the shots. If Lord Enerjak tries to object to something she says...she just gives him this look...and he shuts right up. I think she's got some sort of threat over him. But what...I can't figure out. I mean, Lord Enerjak is invincible, and what could she possibly have to threaten him with?" EnerAsh sub-consciously reached and felt a scar over his heart. He frowned. "Yes, what could she have that would be a threat to Lord Enerjak?" "Exactly my point..." Julie-su trailed off. She looked at EnerAsh with a disgusted look. "You don't think she is....I mean that he might be...or they are...y'know..." EnerAsh read her thoughts easily. He threw back his head and laughed. "I assure you, that is quite impossible." Julie-su nodded quickly. "Well, no I just thought maybe I should suggest it...because it *could* be a possibility. But I see that my Lord is too far above such...acts." EnerAsh snickered. "Oh, is he." Julie-su blushed a crimson red. EnerAsh began again. "Tell me, Julie-su, why do you call him your Lord? I am not your Lord as well?" Julie-su blinked. "I...guess you are..." "And from past experience do you feel I am above such...acts?" Julie-su blushed again. "If My Lord is through with me..." EnerAsh looked at her. He smiled. "I do not recall saying I was..." "Rage!" The Crocodile grinned. "Hey man, glad to see you're still alive an' kickin'." "Cool it, Vector," Rage shushed. "Unless you want the Dark Legion all over us. There's about five guards standing outside." "Whoa...better tell Charms and Might to get back inside," Vector joked. "I s'pose you came to tell us you're ready to kick some Krag-tail?" "Yeah, get them." Rage nodded. "And get general Stryker too." "What?" Vector blinked. "You gotta be kiddin' me, man. You wanna ask that skid?" "Yes, we need his troupes to help subdue the Dark Legion," Gabe said, coming out of the shadows. "I took a look at the computers...I can hack them to shreds." Vector jumped. "Whoa...a freakin' human!" "Keep your voice down!" Rage hissed. "Where's Espio?" "I dunno, he's around..." Vector waved a hand. "I'll get Charmy and Mighty, and Stryker...and meet you at the usual." "Good." Rage nodded. "Can you tell me where to find Espio?" "Right behind ya, Rage," the Chameleon stepped out from the wall. "I've been waiting all week to kick Enerjak's butt." "Great." Rage nodded. "You're gonna help me get Gabriel here into the Dark Legion computer command center." "Oh...got some email you need to respond to?" Espio asked. "Hardy har har." Gabe replied sarcastically. "For your information, I don't have an email addy." "So what's the plan, Rage?" Vector asked. "I'll explain after we've assembled the troupes." He paused. "One last thing, does anyone know where Archimedes is?" Chapter Three: Haven "Well, it seems our visitors have done this before," Guardian Locke remarked. He followed the path of the silver echidna and KTE through the Rainbow Valley on the trail for Echidnopolis. "It certainly does," his father, Guardian Delos nodded. "I never thought I'd live to see a visit from a silver echidna." "Why not?" Guardian Locke asked. "Knuckles' friend Rage is blue." "It seems nowadays, it is us red echidnas that are rare ones." Guardian Delos cleared his throat. "Odd how the Masked one is leading, and not KTE." "All our surveillance of KTE has shown him acting oddly," Guardian Locke frowned. "I still feel it's foolish to simply sit back and watch, Father. Can't we *do* something?" "You know the rules, Locke. Control from Haven never is handle in a physical matter. We can't let Knuckles know about this part of Guardianship till he's ready." "Well, the time in which he will be ready, will never occur if Enerjak isn't defeated," Guardian Locke muttered. "Do you think it's true that the other one is another version of Knuckles?" Guardian Delos asked. "Or is it simply another version of Great-uncle Dimitri causing trouble?" "Does my personal opinion on that really matter?" Guardian Locke asked, suddenly defensive. "Locke...everyone has a dark side." Guardian Delos began. "Really, Father. I can't imagine why you brought such a philosophy up." "I was relating to the fact that the boy calls Enerjak father." Guardian Locke cleared his throat. "A world where I was a slain member of the Dark Legion, and Dimitri was asked to replace me as guardian? Really, Father...we're a little old to believe in such wild tales. That boy, not matter how much he looks like Knuckles, is *not* Knuckles. And he could never be." "Hmm." Guardian Delos nodded. "I thought your reply would be as such." "What's that supposed to mean?" Gabe sat back from the computer and rubbed his eyes. "She's dead, Rage." Rage blinked. "Uh...nothing's happening..." "Give it time," Gabe smiled. As he finished there was a sound of a generator shutting down, and all the computers in the Dark Legion command center crashed. "What did I tell you?" Gabe smiled. "Great." Rage grinned. "Let's go and see how the Chaotix and the Dingoes are making out freeing those people." Chapter Four: Enerjak's Citadel. "You ready?" Masked asked Moon. "Yeah," she nodded. She looked back to KTE. "Okay...we've come this far without any resistance...but they can't too far away. Everyone on your toes...and keep those senses sharp." "You think they even know we're here?" Masked asked. "Well of course we do," Sailor Evil's voice carried the expression of the smirk she was wearing. Behind her stood a seventeen-year-old purple hedgehog with short, spiky purple hair. Beside her was the twenty-two-year-old green fox. "Kit and Ember," Moon whispered. "I heard about them," Masked whispered back. "That's funny," Moon remarked a little too loudly, a little too coolly. "I don't see ETK around. Hmmmm, what happened? He couldn't pick his cell lock?" She laughed. "And you dare say he could replace KTE." "I could and I did," KTE said from behind them. Moon turned. She saw the red echidna was holding a beta-particle blaster aimed at her and Masked. "Damn." She hissed. "And Gabe knew something was up. Why didn't I listen to his wise-cracks?" "Because you thought that's all they were," Masked told her. "Let it go, Moon. I doubt this little snitch could tell Sailor Lame anything." "Does it matter?" Sailor Evil smiled. "So you got this far? So what? Even if you had reached Enerjak...what would you have done? And...if by some tiny chance you had beaten him... EnerAsh would have finished you off." "EnerAsh?" Moon exclaimed. "What did you do to my brother?!" "Reunited him with his Daddy." Sailor Evil smiled. "Where are the others?" "What others? What makes you think it isn't just me and Masked?" Moon demanded. "Oh, you're stupid, dear. But you're not that stupid." Sailor Evil waved a hand. "Kit, Ember...go and get Julie-su. Find the others...and kill them." Kit and Ember nodded, then disappeared through another door. "Now, Moon..." Sailor Evil smiled. "Give me the Silver Crescent Moon Wand." "Over my dead body." Moon hissed. "As you wish." Sailor Evil drew her sword... Chapter Four: "Tell me what she has that He's afraid of," EnerAsh whispered into Julie-su's ear. He kissed her neck. "There's..." Julie swooned, and nearly fell. "A sword..." EnerAsh grinned...he still had it. "A sword? Hmmmm, tell me more." He kissed her cheek. "It's supposed to be able to destroy Enerjak..." Julie-su whispered. "At least...that's what she said....she took it from the kid..." "And what did she do with it?" he kissed her mouth. "She has it with her...in boot..." Julie-su sighed when he pulled away. "Thank-you, Julie, you have been most helpful," he smacked her upside the head, and let her drop to the floor. "Julie-su!" The purple hedgehog cried. EnerAsh cursed...why did the help always come in when you least wanted them to? "Kit. Ember. Excellent. I was just about to commence searching for you." He smiled a little. "There is something I desperately want to share with you." "What?" Kit demanded. "This." A bolt of chaos energy threw them into the wall, knocking them unconscious. No time for guilt. He had to stop Sailor Evil. EnerAsh drew upon the Chaos Energy. Unfathomable power...just a thought...and he could do anything...but he would do it the hard way...because the hard way was so much more enjoyable. He wanted to see Sailor Evil's face when The Chaos Knight paid her a visit. "ETK! Shoot him!" Sailor Evil pointed to Masked. "Okay." ETK fired the particle blaster. "Warning...evasive actions suggested" the data screen flashed. "Well tell me what ones to take," Masked muttered. But it was too late, micro-seconds later the beta-particles slammed into his skull. At least they would have if the mask hadn't repelled them. "You want a piece of me, Clone?" Masked called to ETK. "Come and get me!" "Ow! You're pulling my hair!" Sailor Evil wailed as Moon tugged on one of her long silver strands. "You look like you're in need of some aid, Sailor Evil," a voice said. All four of the combatants looked up to see the Chaos Knight leaning against the doorway. "Warning...detect of high radiates of Chaos energy!" the data screen began rapidly flashing. No kidding, thought Masked. "Come to lend a badly needed hand to your friends, Ener*jerk*?" Masked snapped. "Sailor Evil, I know a weakness in this Masked Echidna. I require the sword you removed from the child," The Chaos Knight replied. Sailor cried out as Moon slammed a fist into her stomach. "Ow! Take it! Kill the little freak!" She managed to pull out the sword, but Moon knocked it out of her hand. "Masked! Get the Blade and use it on Chaos!" The Chaos' Knight's green eyes focused on the Blade. The data screen also targeted the Blade: "Master Tool: Blade of the Guardian. By inserting the dagger up to its hilt in the previously scarred area of Chaos Knight will result in his liberation from the power of Enerjak." "I got it, Moon!" Masked cried. He drove for the Blade. "No! I need that!" Chaos threw a bolt of energy at Masked. Masked ducked. "Yaaaaaaaw!" He roundhouse kicked Chaos' legs out from under him. Chaos fell on his back, but recovered quickly, throwing another blast of energy at Masked. But it had about as much effect as the beta particle blast ETK had shot at him. Masked turned and grabbed for the Blade again. "Where's KTE?" Moon demanded, slamming Sailor Evil up against the wall. "What did you do to him?" "Killed him!" Sailor Evil screamed. "Buried him under a ton of rock!" "No!" Moon slammed her against the wall again. "Hey, anybody need some help in here?" Rage asked. Behind him Gabe, and the Chaotix stood. They'd already freed Julie-Su. They'd also found the unconscious three in the other hall. Gabe had insisted on bringing them for bargaining power. With all the citizens of Echidnopolis freed and fighting alongside the Dingoes, the Dark Legion didn't stand a chance. It also helped that all their computer systems had crashed. "Rage! Julie-Su!" Knuckled grinned. "I've never been so happy to see you!" They opened his cell and Knux promptly demanded to know: "Rage, how's Mickey and my Mom?" "Great. Mickey's safe. And your Mom is beating the tar out of a Dark Legioner as we speak. C'mon, Enerjak's next." Masked was repetitively punching the Chaos Knight in hopes of making him drop the Blade of the Guardian. He did...but it had fallen away, and the two were too busy trying to kill each other to notice. Masked had slammed ETK up against the wall, knocking him unconscious, when he'd had a moment to spare from Chaos. Only now was the clone getting up. But any attempt to do something was cut short when the Chaotix and Knuckles burst into the room. Masked laughed despite the pain in his side from Chaos' boot toe. "Looks like you're out numbered, Sailor Evil." Sailor Evil glared up from where Moon had her pinned to the wall. "Yeah and we got your friends, too." Knuckles pointed to the bound and gagged Julie-su, Ember, and Kit. "Give up." "Give up?" Sailor Evil gasped. "Don't the meaning of the words. As far as I'm concerned we won." "Yeah, he who runs away lives to fight another day." ETK added. "So long, suckers. I'll make sure to tell your friend Vega 'hi', Moon..." Sailor Evil cackled. And then she vanished. Taking ETK, Julie-su, Ember, and Kit with her. Chaos used the moment of confusion their disappearance caused to shove Masked off him, and then grabbed the Blade and limped away. "After him!" Masked shouted, but Moon held him back. "Hold it," she said. "We can't all go after him. It'll be too hectic." "Well, I'm going." Masked announced. "And no one's gonna stop me." "Me too. It's a family matter." Knux and Moon said at the exact same time. "The rest of you go and take care of things outside," Knuckles ordered. The Chaotix and Rage nodded, and left. Gabe looked at Moon. "Go on. Get out of here." She said. He turned and left slowly. "Now, look here, Masked Guy, Silver. Enerjak's one tough-" Knux began. "So like a Son of Edmund," Moon interrupted him. "Always talking when there's work to be done." She shoved Knuckles and Masked forward. "Let's move, boys!" Chapter Five: The Chaos Knight didn't bother changing forms. No doubt Enerjak knew who he was. "Well? Where is Sailor Evil?" Enerjak demanded. "What news have you of the condition outside?" "Sailor Evil and the others have deserted us, Father." The Chaos Knight said. "Outside is turmoil. The Dark Legion has fallen, failed us. The citizen are freed." Enerjak snorted. "So you bring me nothing but news of our misfortunes? This does not please me, EnerAsh." "No," Chaos withdrew the Blade of the Guardian. "I bring you the threat which Sailor Evil held over you." Enerjak's pupil-less, green eyes glittered. "Give it to me." Chaos nodded. "I shall, Father." He raised the Blade, aligning it so it would pierce Enerjak's heart... Then someone slammed into him, knocking him aside, and tossing the silver dagger to the ground. Chaos rolled over and saw Masked, now armed with the Blade, hovering above him. "You stupid idiot...I could have finished him!" He seethed. "It would have been all over." Masked's data screen target-locked the scar, infa-red through his shirt's cloth material. "It is all over, for you." He slammed the dagger clear up to the hilt into the previous wound. Chaos cried out, and then was still. "Masked, you really were an idiot to do that," Moon had dropped beside him. "But...nice going." She pulled the Blade out. Chaos' white shirt was quickly turning red. Although the red appeared tinged with green. Moon whipped the dagger on Chaos' cloak. Then she handed to Masked. "Think you and Knux can do that to Enerjak?" Masked looked over to where Knux and Enerjak had already begun to duke it out. "Piece of cake." He said. "What about you?" "Gotta deal with things here.." Moon replied. Masked nodded. "Hang on, Knux, I'm coming!" Moon knelt beside the still body. She moved to pull off the mask that had appeared on the bleeding boy's face. Behind her, Enerjak threw Knuckles to the ground. "Argh!" Knux cried out. Moon looked up, then was knocked aside. Chaos had recovered, and was moving towards Masked and a sneering Enerjak. "You really think you can harm me, little metal-faced fool?" Enerjak asked Masked. Masked and Chaos both had their hands on the Blade. But they didn't fight over it. And when the Blade when in, the mask that was on Chaos' face fell away. There was a violent reaction. An explosion of emerald light flared in the room. Moon hit the ground painfully halfway to Knuckles. When she could finally see again...the Chaos Knight and the Masked Echidna were gone. The two red echidnas on the floor looked worse off than she was. Moon hastily scrambled over to them. It was Knuckles...and Dimitri? Knux moaned, and Moon told him not to strain himself. Then the Chaotix, Rage, Julie-Su, and Gabe came in moments later. "What happened?" Espio asked. "We heard an explosion." Charmy Bee added. "Where's Masked?" Gabe demanded. "Everyone okay?" Rage asked. "Looks like there was one wild party in here," Vector joked. "Whoa," Mighty remarked, looking around at the totaled room. "You weren't trying to learn how to dance, were you, Knux?" Julie-Su asked. "Who's that?" Archimedes the Fire Ant asked, appearing beside Knuckles. "Archy? Great, *now* you show up." Knux muttered. The other half-dead echidna moaned. "It's Dimitri..." Knuckles gasped. Then a conversation began. It was only Gabe and Moon that didn't participate in it. "Where are they?" Gabe asked Moon. "Gone. First KTE...now Masked and Ash..." Moon started to cry. "Oh, Gabe..." "Don't break down just yet," Gabe dismissed her tears coldly. "I was thinking about what Sailor Evil said about say 'hi' to your friend Vega. The only Vega we ever met was Sailor Vega H." "You think she's gone to Sailor Vega H's home realm?" Moon asked. "Yes. Do you know where it is?" "I think so..." "Good. Let's tie things up here quickly, and see of we can't beat them there." Chapter Six: Location: Unknown The guy in the mask looked from the viewing screen to the guy in the long, brown cloak. "Think we should go to 'em? It'd save 'em a lot of grief." The other guy shrugged, and gingerly touched his chest above his heart. "Naw. Let's go on ahead.
