Formats: Sega Game Gear
Genre: Strategy
Developer: Sega of Europe
Rating: K-A
Debut: October, 1995 (Europe)
Cast: Sonic the Hedgehog, Dr. Ivo Robotnik/Dr. Eggman
In his latest attempt to slow Sonic down, Dr. Robotnik created a pair of harmless-looking boots that would slow the running speed of anyone who wore them. While Sonic was napping one day, one of Robotnik's Badniks swapped Sonic's normal sneakers with the special ones the Eggman made. When he awoke, Sonic put on the special boots without noticing anything unusual...until he tried to dash off. It was as if his feet were glued to the ground; he could barely move! Robotnik informed him that the only way to take the sneakers off was to use Chaos Emerald power, and the Chaos Emeralds were in Robotnik's mysterious Super Labyrinth. Armed with nothing but his Spin Dash, Sonic headed into the Super Labyrinth to get the Emeralds and restore his speed.

Imagine Sonic 3D Blast meets Marble Madness and you have a very good idea of Labyrinth's gameplay. The object is to Spin Dash around 3D maze boards (viewed from a ¾ perspective), collecting three keys in each stage to open the exits (and occasionally fighting a boss). You can walk around without spinning, but seeing as Sonic moves about as fast as a sleepy chunk of granite (Hey, he's lost his speed, remember?), that's a death wish with those murderous time limits. The clock is your biggest and most dangerous enemy in Labyrinth.

The game initially seems sub-standard, as many gamers may find the control to be frustrating (you can't jump, either) and the gameplay simply too left-field, especially if you go in expecting classic Sonic goodness. For this reason, it wasn't received too well among fans. But for those willing to take the time to brush past initial disappointment, a fun and intriguing game of puzzles awaits. Discovering secrets around the surreal Labyrinth worlds is the game's biggest draw, and the enchanting music further builds the atmosphere, aside from being some of the best stuff ever heard on Game Gear.

Grade: C

Labyrinth of the Sky
Labyrinth of the Sky: Welcome to the great wide open! Bumpers and flippers fling you across the maze like a little blue pinball. Springs let you leap up to higher levels. Badniks fire sticky wads of glue to slow you down so they can attack.
Labyrinth of the Sea
Labyrinth of the Sea: This underwater maze has doors to secret rooms, quicksand traps and cannons to fire you over barriers. Some cannons switch directions. Press button 1 or 2 to fire in the direction shown by the arrow.
Labyrinth of the Factory
Labyrinth of the Factory: High voltage! Test your speed against magnetic conveyor belts, and dodge power volts coming from the ceiling. Centipede creatures ricochet around tiny, secret platforms -- attack or use the square warp gates to get out of the way. Moving star platforms carry you from maze to maze, but beware -- some of these platforms explode, leaving you to plummet to a terrible fate!
Labyrinth of the Castle

Labyrinth of the Castle: The castle corridors are filled with ghosts and guillotines, arrow-firing bird soldiers and treacherous traps. Watch your step on the narrow walkways -- there are drops on either side, and it's a long way down.
