Story? Hey, who knows? Seeing as this is just a conceptual version of Knuckles' Chaotix, the story eventually became that of Carnival Island and Dr. Robotnik's Combi Confiner. At this point, it's nothing. But my goodness, isn't that title screen pretty? (Hehehe...)

It's not that Sonic Crackers was canned, it's just that the title eventually developed into a different game entirely...Knuckles' Chaotix. Imagine if Sonic and Tails were connected by a long, elastic band, and you have a good idea of the gameplay in Crackers. Presumably, it isn't as polished as Chaotix, with quirky control (the same button is used to jump and grab Tails) and ALOT of glitches. The graphics are pretty good, atleast.

Two Time Attack stages are now playable thanks to the wonder of Genesis emulation. The first seems to be a rough impression of the Techno Tower Zone, while the second seems to be a very rough test of the Speed Slider Zone. There are also two "field" maps, which are isometric boards that were apparently planned to be used as a way for the player to select a level.

It's probably not fair to rate the conceptual plans of something that later evolved into a decent game, but I had to use this cool "one star" graphic somewhere:
