Sonic at TGS Fall '98

If you've stopped worshipping your Sonic dolls long enough to surf the internet, then you've most likely been up-to-date on the happenings at the recent Tokyo Game Show in Japan. TGS Fall '98 had many interesting offerings, but the Dreamcast predictably stole the show. Playable demos of Sonic Adventure, Virtua Fighter 3tb, Climax Landers, and some others were shown. Some non-playable video demos (most notably of Sega Rally Championship 2) appeared as well. Some surprise announcements (Grandia 2, Sakura Wars 3, Namco as a definite third-party developer, etc.) had everyone walking away with Dreamcast on the brain. All in all, it was apparently a very interesting event, and I am burning with uncontrollable jealousy over everyone who had the opportunity to go. (Aren't we all?) Anyway, here's some actual gameplay info I compiled from those lucky attendees who got a jab at the playable Sonic Adventure demo:

There were five demos shown, each running a different character in a different level. Most notably, it's very fast. Very, very fast. Sonic's demo was in the Speed Highway Zone, and the goal was to dash through to certain checkpoints in a given amount of time. He gets around by dashing straight up the sides of skyscrapers, hitching a ride to higher levels on helicopters, and spinning airborn by bopping Badniks upside the head. Sonic's game is logically all about speed...ALOT of speed...

Tails' demo was in the IceCap Zone. Miles' task in this level is snowboarding down a mountainside, keeping ahead of an avalanche from behind him. He must also beat Sonic at a snowboarding race. The snow is apparently very realistic, as you can see the individual flakes zooming into the screen. No pasted 2D environmental effects here, this is the real deal!

Needless to say, you're going to be spending alot of your Adventure time moving and thinking at an obscene speed...I don't know about anyone else, but that is MY kind of game! Of course, those who prefer something a bit on the slower side needn't freak. Knuckles was shown in the Red Mountain Zone, his object being merely to explore the level, searching for three crystals.

It's back up to speed as Amy, shown in (presumably) the Egg Carrier Zone, or some kind of metallic fortress. Being chased by a large robot, she can't stop for a second without getting pelted by heavy ammo, and probably losing her Rings... Reportedly, there aren't many Badniks in this level, but the ones they do have can be taken out in one swing with her Magical Hammer. Once destroyed, little animals hop happily out of the robot shells (brings back memories, doesn't it?), and Amy can grab them. If grabbed before they escape, a small icon appears on the bottom-right corner of the screen...it's presumed that if you collect all of the animals in the level, something interesting happens... From what I've seen of Amy's screenshots, I can deterine this of her story: While shopping in the Speed Highway Zone, she notices a Badnik putting the nab on a helpless Flicky. She gives chase, and apparently ends up getting captured herself (I've seen screenshots of her in a prison cell of some sort). She escapes, and makes a run for it in the metallic prison (the level just described). Keep in mind that's just speculation, there, but it does fit together. Is it just me, or did Amy suddenly get a whole lot cooler?

The fifth demo was of E-102g. Not much info on this one, other than there's Badniks a-plenty to blast to pieces. Apparently, E-102g's shooting system takes a bit of getting used to...the more interesting part of his game is likely going to be working out different shooting techniques with his laser rifle. (See, even shooter fans will find joy in Sonic Adventure!) E-102g can also leap high and hover for short periods of time, and his legs transform into wheels for ramps and other high-speed areas.

Unfortunately, no demo of Big was given, but I'm willing to wager his game will emphasize on puzzle-solving more than speed... Truly, Sonic Adventure is a game that takes the best of all given genres and rolls them into a fine treat for any gamer, hardcore or casual. I've noted definite gameplay elements of: RPG, platformer, racer, shooter, puzzle, and action...lots and lots of action. This is definitely going to be game for all time. I'm more excited than ever...
