Sequel Rumors

When you see a good movie, you say to yourself: "Hey, that was good. I wonder if they're going to make a sequel." When you play a good game, you say to yourself: "Hey, that was good. I wonder when the sequel's coming out." Thankfully, unlike movies, videogame sequels more often than not turn out to be better than the originals. Maybe that's why so many excited rumors get started, and Sonic Team probably holds claim to more sequel rumors than any other developer.

Of course, everyone and their mother's goldfish knows about Sonic Adventure by this point. Most of the game has been revealed, and outside of some minor tweaking, it's ready for shipping. And you'll find all the SA info there is to know elsewhere on this site, so I won't go into it here.

The next biggest thing on the agenda is the alleged sequel to Burning Rangers, which is destined to be known as one of the last great Saturn titles. The reported Dreamcast sequel, although unconfirmed or even hinted at officially, comes from some highly reliable sources. It's also logical to believe that Sonic Team would want to create a sequel on that platform so that they could do with the title what the Saturn's limitations wouldn't let them. At this point, there is still no further evidence that a sequel is indeed in the works, but even if there is we shouldn't expect to hear anything about it until after Sonic Adventure's release. In short, of any of the rumored Sonic Team sequels, I deem this one to be the most likely. Let us pray. (3D butt-cracks, baby!)

And of course, this isn't to neglect the long-anticipated NiGHTS 2. At this point, there isn't so much as a single rumor regarding this sequel, which has nonetheless been dubbed "Dream NiGHTS" by most. Outside of vastly improved graphics, it's hard to imagine a Dreamcast sequel to NiGHTS being much better than the original. I find it difficult to imagine a worthwhile sequel to the game at all, but lucky for NiGHTS fans everywhere that's not my job. ^_^ And several months ago, Yuji Naka was asked by an interviewer about the possibility of a sequel to NiGHTS on the Dreamcast. In Naka-sama's own words: "No, no. First Sonic, then maybe NiGHTS." Well, it's better than nothing...

And, of course, we have the lightly rumored sequel to Sonic the Fighters (known in the US as Sonic Championship). Rumors about this began exploding about a month ago, but Sega quickly stifled that fire with a flat-out and official denial that any such sequel was planned. Considering Yu Suzuki and the AM2 gang are hard at work on "Project Berkely" with Virtua Fighter 4 being a runner-up to that project (not to mention further arcade-to-Dreamcast conversions like Spikeout and Daytona USA 2), it's unlikely that plans for a Sonic the Fighters 2 could exist among such large and important projects. But then, who's to say what lurks in the minds of bored AM2 designers?

In closing, I guess I should mention something about this "Sonic & Knuckles RPG" that's slapped all over the internet. Honestly, I label this rumor as nothing more than a misconception of the "RPG elements in Sonic Adventure" statement. Some rather high reporters apparently got the wrong idea, and thus the "Sonic & Knuckles RPG" was born. Small loss, as it seems to me the Dreamcast is starting off with an RPG line-up that's more than strong enough to require Sonic's help (Climax Landers, Evolution, Grandia 2, "Project Berkely", the upcoming Capcom RPG, and those are only the noteworthy ones).

As long as there are new original games, there will be sequels. As long as there are sequels, there will be more sequels. Never enough of a good thing, indeed.
