Sonic Strikes Again

As a reflection of the recent price-slash in Japan, Dreamcast sales have shot through the roof at roughly 50,000 units zipping off shelves the first week of the "re-launch." Software sales have also enjoyed a blip of activity, with some old classics returning to the top 20 charts. One of these "old classics" is Sonic Adventure, with somewhere between 20,000 and 26,000 (reports vary drastically) copies sold in the first week of the new, aggresively-priced DC. This brings the total units sold up to roughly 420,000, still the top-selling Dreamcast title yet.

In other news, Sonic Adventure is confirmed as one of the titles to be included in the initial North American DC demo disc. It will almost assuredly be playable.

DC trailers can be seen preceding the box office debut of South Park, and where there is Dreamcast, there is Sonic. The SP movie is the only confirmed ad runner so far, but it surely won't be DC's only silver screen piggyback this summer.

Most folks who even pretend to keep up-to-date in GameLand have heard of IGN's official Dreamcast Magazine by now. One little plus about being official is that they get Sonic as their mascot, and the Great Blue One can be found all over the cover of issue 1 and the two-page ad for it. Sonic and Knuckles, in full-length glory, greet the eyes of all those who show enough interest to so much as glance at the cover. The header reads: "Sega Dreamcast goes SUPERSONIC!" The ad is just as eye-catching, with one of the only two 3D Adventure-model renders of Sonic available hedgehogging a whole page, leaving room only for the catch phrase: "From the editors of Next Generation... The Best Games. The Best Graphics. The Best Mascot." No arguments there. If my scanner wasn't playing dead, I'd have visual proof of my testament. Issue 1 of the Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine hits the shelves August 24th.

For all you aspiring graphic artists out there (keep in touch, I'll need you when I start my own development studio...no, really!), Sega plans to release a series of videos explaining various techniques used in developing 3D titles. The videos will reportedly feature Yu Suzuki and members of Sonic Team discussing some 3D modeling techniques. If you're interested, you'll be able to buy 'em at Joypolis, only in Japan of course.
