SA: Coming Home

The latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly sheds new light on the localization of Sonic Adventure. It's a well-known fact that twelve members of Sonic Team have been doin' their thing on the US version, ironing out the glitches and tweaking the camera. But it seems they've gone a hop, skip, and jump (or rather a dash, glide, and spin) further to add a couple little things unavailable in the Japanese version.

As many may have noticed in Sonic Adventure: Limited Edition, characters have more than just one "standby" animation. Now they vary on the area the character is in. Leave Tails standing in the condo lobby right by Emerald Coast, for example, and he eventually looks around and remarks: "This is a nice hotel." I still haven't seen Sonic put his hands on his hips, tap his foot, and give me a nasty glare yet, though...

Some of the voice files (like the P.A. system at the train station) are new to the US version, as is the screen that shows how many Sonic Emblems you've collected. Reportedly, there are also new VMU games in the works for the debut of the SA website. And here's an interesting kicker: according to the article, SoA's in negotiations with an unnamed major star to do one of the voices in the game (although not Sonic's). Not a hint of who this "star" might be or which character he/she would portray...but if my prayers are answered, it'll be either Amy or Big.

On a final note, in detailing the game's US re-structuring, Dennis Lee (Sega product analyst) mentioned that: "They had one guy who for a month and a half was tweaking cameras. That was his only mission. I think he was getting pretty sick of it by the time he was done."
