Hey, just what the heck did ever happen to Sonic the Fighters,
anyway? The big cheese of AM2 has spoken regarding the fate of the fast fist fest. *snicker*
In a recent interview on Videogames.com, Yu Suzuki had
this to say about the vaporware home version of Sonic's second (and so far, last) arcade
appearance:
"At the time we didn't have enough people to do a home port of the game. We usually have
around five game titles in production at one time, and each one takes about a year to complete on
average, so it's always a toss-up of which games we can do. Also, we tend to try to focus on
working on new projects. If there is a lot of demand for a game like Sonic the Fighters, then
we'll definitely look into doing it."
There you have it. The game bounced around Sega's "coming soon" list for years
only to end up in gaming limbo as the Saturn passed on to gaming heaven. It seems that AM2
didn't want to devote any resources to a project that simply never had much demand. A DC version
could happen after all should that demand suddenly pop out of thin air, but I seriously doubt
it's going to happen. Although I can just see the online petitions now... "Save Our
StF!"
