Sonic Team

SA2 not in the hands of Sonic Team is an incredibly frightening thought, since after Sonic left the hands of Sonic Team way back in early-to-mid 90's, it was a huge cash-in let's-make-money-by-making-seriously-cool-gaming-icons-into-ridiculous-kiddie-characters disaster. Naka certainly knows how easy it is for liscencees to tarnish Sonic's image, and knows full-well that if Sonic leaves the hands of Sonic Team once more, they'll have to go through the whole process of remaking the character again (after which, probably nobody will accept Sonic any more). But on the other hand, Naka doesn't like doing sequels all that much (not that he despises 'em, he just likes creating new worlds; can you blame him?), but if "Sonic Adventure 2" is indeed in the hands of Sega of America Dreamcast, then Naka will definately oversee the whole project and make sure it stays Sonic. This is mere speculation, but you can be damn sure that Naka won't let history repeat itself. (Same goes with the mythological "Sonic Shuffle"; if it's true, then Naka will probably supervise it.) In addition, every non-ST Sonic game since 3D Blast has had to recieve Naka's approval.

What I'm curious about, however, is the storyline. Nobody really recognizes Sonic Adventure for the excellent story it had; forget Dante, Shakespeare, Tolstoy; this is what we're after! My problem with it, though, is that it never brought out Sonic's character. He was in his usual cheesy-cool attitude the entire time; save for a few angered lines ("You won't get away with this, you madman!"), Sonic never acted pissed, cynical, or worried; just oddly giddy. They never really defied Sonic's character in SA, but they also never brought out enough of it. I want to see Sonic's different emotional ups and downs, not just Sonic keeping himself the same exact mood the whole time. They could make some really cool Sonic vs. Robotnik scenes where Robotnik is attempting to hurt Sonic by prodding at his emotions, where Sonic is stuck between anger and fear. C'mon, Naka, you've got a boatload of cool characters to work with, do something with 'em!

-- SA2 to you too! --
"Wow, a rumor!" says D-H. "I've never seen one of those before!" Suprisingly enough, this rumor isn't related to Sega's status as a hardware company. No, this rumor-- or rather, these rumors-- are regarding the latest Sonic games. A Sega rep let it slip that E3 would be showcasing the new Sonic The Hedgehog games, plural. Meaning, there's at least two new Sonic games in the works. What are they, then?

A sequel to Sonic Adventure has been confirmed, but the big question is: will it be in the hands of Sonic Team? An allegedly "reliable" Chinese source (according to Zifei) says no, Sega of America is handling the project. (SOA's Sega Technical Institute division, under the guidance of Naka [and Iizuka, in some cases], was responsible for Sonic 2, Sonic 3, and Sonic & Knuckles.) Of course, STI by themselves created Sonic X-Treme, which was supposedly horrible and was canned by Sega of Japan. It's also worth mentioning that NiGHTS 2 was also confirmed by a "reliable" Chinese source; and it's likely that these two sources are the same, meaning it's quite unreliable. (Don't believe in NiGHTS 2 unless the man himself confirms it.) Meaning there's still hope for SA2 to be backed by Sonic Team, albeit a slim one since they're working on Phantasy Star Online.

The existance of a Sonic party game has been rumored since issue 4 of the Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine, and Daily Radar claims that the title is in development, will be at E3, may contain other, non-Sonic Sega characters and is entitled "Sonic Shuffle." Sounds a little too much like Sonic teaching us to squaredance, but you can't have everything. Gameplay details of the rumored party game are pretty much nil; (NOTE: the following consists of random guesses) it may consist of minigames (a la Mario Party), or it may involve traditional Sonic gameplay with added multiplayer chaos, or it may involve having sex with Sarah Bryant; the possibilities are endless.

Aaaand, Sonic RPG. How should I say... bullschkrips. A long time ago, whenst Dreamcast waseth Dural, details slipp-ed regarding the new Sonic game. Various leakings (ewww) claimed that it was an RPG, when rather it had RPG _elements_. Of course, when SA was announced, some did not realize that this fabled "Sonic RPG" was really Sonic Adventure, and even after SA was out Next Generation Online had "Sonic/Knuckles RPG" on its confirmed release list. And then, like an overload of methane in front of a hot date, the rumors regarding this "Sonic RPG" exploded and stunk up the industry pretty bad. Ogay beoble, so we don hafba hold our noded mudg lunger, dere iiiiis no Sodic RPG. Sodic RPG id Sodic Adbedture. (secures gask mask) Man, NGO really let one this time.
