In case you're behind the curve, a few weeks ago Sega basically amputated all
its R&D divisions and left them under the direct control of CSK (Sega's parent company). The
ramifications of this action became apparent in a recent interview with GameWEEK, where the Man
discusses the possibility of Sonic Team's involvement with non-Sega platforms:
"My main focus is Dreamcast, but Sonic Team is separating from Sega, so anything is
possible... I do not think very highly of PlayStation 2. There have been many problems with it.
With Dolphin and Xbox, however, there is a possibility. Who knows? If I did decide to do
something outside of Dreamcast, I would be inclined to go in that direction, yes."
An exciting prospect indeed, and a huge step forward for Sonic Team. Ah, what
an industry. Pop a gamer of five years ago into today and tell him that the possibility of
Sonic and Mario appearing on the same platform is no longer a distant dream and he'd laugh you
straight into the priesthood. Amen, brother.
On the other side of the table, the Mario man himself Shigeru Miyamoto
admitted in an online interview with Famitsu that his current favorite non-Nintendo game is
Samba de Amigo. Allegedly, Miyamoto-san digs the monkeys 'cause it's such an original
concept and because it's a "good game for kids." Suuuure, Shiggy. The kids, uh-huh. Don't
think we don't know about your wee-hour "Samba sessions" in the garage. We've got pictures,
and unless you swear upon your honor that Luigi is going to be present in the next major
Mario game, we WILL use them. Oh, and while you're at it, kill that damned Yoshi thing.
He's scaring our kids.
