You saw it HERE first, kids! Everyone knew that Phantasy Star Online
and Samba de Amigo would be on-hand at TGS, but nobody could have foreseen the unveiling
of Sonic Team's most secretive title to date: Burning Rangers: Hentai Edition! That's
right, we're getting a Dreamcast sequel to BR, although it's definitely NOT what we were
expecting...
BR: Hentai Edition is identical to the Saturn original, lacking one
major aspect: clothes. That's right, the whole BR crew is now making our future brighter...in
the all! But they're not alone: the victims are also parading au naturel, from Hiroko
Losey to Prince Lemmon to Yuji Naka and the Sonic Team gang. Can you feel the temperature
rising?
The game plays a bit differently, too. Gone is the "Danger Meter" of the
Saturn original. Instead, it is replaced by a "Burn Meter", which is reflected in the tone of
your character's flesh. As you progress through the level, your character's skin will actually
darken according to the amount of flames he/she is exposed to. Finish the Mission quickly
enough, and your player will return to the Burning-Ship with a nice, crisp tan. Take too long,
and he/she will contract a nasty sunburn which will slow their progress.
So why the big change? Naoto Ohshima, the game's lead director, explains:
"Nudity fits with the futuristic theme of Burning Rangers. Why do we wear clothes today? Why
have we worn clothes since the dawn of civilization? To protect our bodies from the elements,
but in the future, special injections and invisible forcefields will make this unnecessary.
Wearing clothes is a burden, and having the characters run freely in their most natural forms
reflects the 'beautiful future' that Burning Rangers is meant to portray."
Nudity is great and all, but is there really going to be any hardcore hentai
action in BRHE? Says Ohshima-san: "I can't really comment on that at this time, but I will say
this much: some of those survivors can be really, really grateful..." Unfortunately,
Ohshima-san could not be questioned further, as he was then escourted off the show floor for not
wearing any clothes.
Rumors among industry insiders abound regarding an attachment for the Jump Pack
that allows you to strap it on like a belt. The peripheral also includes a special compartment
for holding tissues, although this was not on display at the show. Burning Rangers: Hentai
Edition is slated for a Japanese release in Q5 of this year. No announcement was made
regarding a US release, although I expect any such revelations to be made at E3.
Below are screens of the re-done anime intro. I also had some nice shots of
the cute Dreamcast Girls cosplaying as the BRHE cast, but tragically, all the film was ruined
due to excessive drool. Maybe next year...
